I am now finished with my first year of college and I am three weeks into my second year. If I said that is was exactly what I thought it would be, I would be lying. There are many benefits of going away to college. Though I am finding it hard to understand what they are. At this point, I do not really believe that the information that we learn while we are in college is nearly as important as what we learn about ourselves. I will give you one example.

I have not made many friends at college. Not because I do not want to, but because I have found that I am actually shy. (If you know me, you probably think this is dumb and you do not believe me but it is true.) I grew up in a small town. And in that small town I was a hero. Everyone knew me. I was somebody. I did not just blend into the crowd. But now that I am away from that, I find myself walking down the sidewalks between classes and I know that the people that pass by forget my face the moment that they pass me. I am not a hero to them. But in my mind I am still a hero. (Maybe this is just pride, but a thought nonetheless.) So it makes it a hard reality to swallow. It is weird. I never understood the need for people to be different. To find their own individuality. To have self-expression. Like shaving your head into a green mohawk. But now I see it. I understand because I am feeling it. To them I am nobody. Just a face.

Why do you believe in Democracy?
For quite sometime, there has been a lot of debate that has challenged the core values of America. We have always hailed ourselves as “the land of the free and the home of the brave” but, to many people, our freedom has been far from that which so many before us fought bravely for. If you asked most people, you would probably see a consensus that there has been too much freedom within our government. Too much freedom you ask? Do we actually have too much of the founding element in our country? I would have too agree that in some ways yes, we do.

So with the scarred image of Democracy as it stands today, why should we believe in it? I believe in democracy because I believe in the fall of man. While, I think, many believe because of the opposite. Mankind is so fallen that no man can be trusted with unchecked power over his fellow man. Democracy, as it stands today, has a fleeted from this position.

I am not trying to be blunt but sometimes it seems like the “tell it like it is” method is the only thing that will get through a “thick skull” these days.

Some people are just idiots! They have no idea where they are going, question everything, will not listen to anyone and still feel that they have a firm grasp on reality. If they would just take off their rose-colored glasses and see the world in a new light I would not have to write this post.

Now I am by no means saying that I know everything or anything. I have a three pound fallen brain just like you. But, wake up people! You have a purpose, you need an agenda. When James said that your life is like a vapor that is what he meant (James 4:14). Now you may not think that there is much love in this post but I promise there is. These people are not hopeless. Sometimes they are just helpless and need someone to show them the way.

I had a conversation with someone the other day who is an atheist. I thought what he had to say was interesting because I think that a lot of people have this same discrepancy with God. He (the atheist) said this “If God is a loving God, then it shouldn’t matter what I believe or think in this life as long as I try my hardest to live a ‘good’ life and be a ‘good’ person. A LOVING God should let me into heaven.”

This is a pretty hard concept to understand to be false without some knowledge of the Bible and what it says about salvation. For someone who do not know much about the bible this statement is very reasonable. But to those who do, this statement can be summed up in one scripture. Ephesians 2:8-9 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.

I would have to say that this topic, along with many other topics of this kind, has to be seen with this view: God IS love BUT, God is JUST. If God were ONLY love then we would get everything, even that which might come to harm us. But if God were ONLY just then we would all get what we deserve–a conscious, eternal torment in hell. I am glad God is the essence of the perfect combination.

Many may of heard of the new kind of counter-culture breed of church that is being labeled as the “Emergent Church”. If you haven’t, then good. It is more complicated and mixed up than you want to put your time into. I promise.

What I have to say about the Emerging or the Emergent Church is this: The Emerging Church will come and go, just as all of the other “movements” within Christianity, but the church of Jesus Christ will continue on because Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever. The Church will always be about Jesus and we (as the body) will do all that we can as long as we can to welcome as many people as we can through as many cultural mediums and adaptations as we can to know the Jesus of the Bible without changing any of our biblical convictions because our goal is not just to be fruitful but also to be faithful.

This is the sentence that I will use to capture your attention and get you to read on… there I did it. Now click “more.” I promise you want to read this post.

I was sitting in the atrium of my school cafeteria today and couldn’t help but overhear a conversation this girl was having with one of her friends. She was telling him about her older step-brother being gay. As she told the story, she went through all of her childhood with him and the kind of relationship that they had and so on. I could tell by the tone of her voice that she really didn’t like the relationship that they had now, after he had told the family that he was gay. She described it as though his sin had somehow distanced her and her family from him. I could tell that she was hurt and that she still really cared for her brother even through all that had happened. She went on to say that his birthday was coming up and that she was writing him a letter and sending him a present, hoping that this would be the start of fixing their relationship.

From the story, I gathered that she lived in a Christian home because she kept saying “I know what my brother is doing is sin. I won’t tell him otherwise. But I also will not condemn him because of it. I will show him love.” This statement: “I will show him love” really caught my attention. It was almost as if she was saying ‘I will show him love and through love I will show him truth.’ In this moment, I felt like my spirit man grew up a little bit. I felt that in that moment God was showing me something. And here is my attempt of putting my finger on it.

Sin is a wretched, nasty, vile, thing. It is something that we all struggle with and journey to overcome. Sometimes we think that if we just forget about sin, this is the best way of dealing with it. But we cannot forget about sin. It plays such an important role in our everyday lives as Christians. It is the reason for the fall of mankind. It is the reason for our daily repentance. And dare I say, it is the reason for our salvation. Without sin there is no need for salvation. No need for a savior because there would be nothing to be saved from.

The bible addresses sin. From the fall in Genesis to Jesus’ coming in Revelation chapter 22. But what the bible has to say about sin and the world’s spin on what the bible says about sin is two different things. In society, sin is broken up and thought of on different levels. This sin is worse than that sin and therefore this sinner is worse than that sinner. But this is not true to the Bible. The Bible does not put degrees on sin in the sense that one sin is worse than the other EXCEPT, the sin of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit (Matthew 12:31). This is the only sin that is unforgivable. With this in mind, think back to the story that the girl was telling– How the sin of her brother distanced him from her and her family. Why? Because they did what most would do. They put a degree on sin. When in God’s eyes his sin of being a homosexual is no worse than lying.

This brings us, I believe, to a very gray area in the church today: the balance between ‘forgiveness’ and ‘love.’ The Bible calls us to love. To, in a sense, show the compassion of Christ. And the Bible also tells us to forgive. But nowhere in the Bible does it say to condemn someone for their sin (Luke 6:31). So where do we as Christians draw the line? First, I believe that this is so much bigger and that there is so much more to this than I can get to in this post so I will try to keep it simple.

I believe that the answer lies within this truth in context of the Bible: God is love (1 John 4:8) but, God is just. We are called to be fishers of men. To catch them but not clean them. God will change their hearts and minds we just have to help them to get in the position for God to do so. John 1:10-13.

By no means am I qualified at all to take on this subject, but I figure that it wouldn’t hurt to start a discussion. A subject like this, I believe, is a conversation that goes on forever. There is no end to wisdom. (At least until perfection comes). I am just adding my interjections to keep the conversation going.

The supreme element in getting anywhere in this Christian walk is gaining the wisdom and understanding that it takes to get there.

We cannot get past our thoughts. A man goes where his thoughts go.

Solomon writes “do not forsake wisdom and she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over you.” Wisdom is supreme. Growing in wisdom and understanding will not only take sacrifice it will cost you all that you have. The Bible defines true wisdom as that which begins with a profound reverence for God. Proverbs 1:7 says that “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.” Out of this grows our understanding of sin and our need for a savior.

Wisdom seeks to understand God’s ways and to walk in them. Thus, in this sense, wisdom is life’s greatest priority.
